Sustainability Strategy

SDGs

193 UN members have committed to achieving 17 global development goals – the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – by 2030. ORIOR also takes its responsibility seriously and contributes to achieving these goals.

Since 2015, the 2030 Agenda has provided an international framework for sustainable development, combining poverty reduction and sustainability. This includes the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which ORIOR also supports.

Based on the recommendations of the UN Global Compact, we have identified the SDGs to which we want to make a targeted contribution.

No Hunger

Relevant Goals/Sub-Goals
2.4 - Ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices.

Our efforts
The ORIOR sustainability strategy aims to make food production more sustainable. To this end, we promote more resilient agriculture through procurement and supplier cooperation, for example by using certified sustainable raw materials.

Health and Well-being

Relevant Goals/Sub-Goals
3 - Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

Our efforts
Occupational safety and health are key areas of action in our sustainability strategy. We take responsibility for the well-being of our employees and are increasingly addressing health issues with suppliers as well.

High-Quality Education

Relevant Goals/Sub-Goals
4.4 - Provide qualifications for decent work and entrepreneurship.

Our efforts
The continuous development and refreshing of specialized knowledge is more important today than ever before. We empower our employees to thrive and offer internal and external opportunities for further qualification.

Gender Equality

Relevant Goals/Sub-Goals
5.1 - End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere.

5.5 - Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life.

Our efforts
At ORIOR, we do not tolerate discrimination based on gender. We promote diversity because mixed teams are more successful and strengthen our culture.

Clean Water and Sanitation

Relevant Goals/Sub-Goals
6.4 - Substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors.

6.6 - Protect and restore water-related ecosystems.

Our efforts
In our environmental management, we continuously measure and reduce our water consumption – for example, during cleaning, machine operation, and employee behavior. Indirectly, we protect water ecosystems through sustainable raw material sourcing.

Affordable and Clean Energy

Relevant Goals/Sub-Goals
7.2 - Increase the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

7.3 - Double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.

Our efforts
We continuously increase energy efficiency in our production operations, for example through improved processes and modern facilities. At the same time, we are increasing the share of renewable energy, for example with a woodchip heating system at Biotta and, since 2020, 100% hydropower for our Swiss companies.

Decent Work and Economic Growth

Relevant Goals/Sub-Goals
8.2 - Achieve higher economic productivity through modernization and innovation.

8.8 - Protect labor rights and promote safe working environments.

Our efforts
Productivity and innovation are among our core goals and enable more sustainable products and solutions. In our Code of Conduct, we commit to protecting labor rights and promoting a safe working environment along the value chain.

Sustainable Consumption and Production

Relevant Goals/Sub-Goals
12.2 - Achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.

12.3 - Halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains.

Our efforts
Resource efficiency is part of our environmental responsibility. We are resolutely countering the waste of raw materials, food, packaging, and water and prioritize these issues in all production facilities.

Measures to Protect the Climate

Relevant Goals/Sub-Goals
13 - Take action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Our efforts
We already achieved and significantly exceeded our goal of reducing greenhouse gas intensity by 10% by 2025 in 2020 (-68.2%). By 2050, we aim to achieve Net Zero as ORIOR.

Underwater Life

Relevant Goals/Sub-Goals
14.3 - Minimize ocean acidification.

14.4 - End overfishing, illegal fishing, and destructive fishing practices.

14.c - Enhance the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and their resources.

Our efforts
Our activities in climate and energy contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions and ocean acidification. In sourcing fish and seafood, we refer to the WWF evaluation system and rely on certified labels such as MSC, ASC, and organic.

Life on land

Relevant Goals/Sub-Goals
15.1 - Ensure the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems.

15.5 - End biodiversity loss.

Our efforts
A sustainable food supply is closely linked to ecological land use. We contribute to this through purchasing and collaboration with suppliers, for example, by increasing the use of raw materials from certified sustainable supply chains.

Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

Relevant Goals/Sub-Goals
16.5 - Substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all their forms.

16.6 - Develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels.

Our efforts
The ORIOR Group is committed to high standards in corporate governance and ethical business conduct. Our Code of Conduct, articles of association, and internal regulations form the basis. We clearly reject corruption and bribery and take into account the expectations of our stakeholders in governance matters.
